After 12 years of teaching high school media, Thomas now directs the Jayhawk Media Workshop along with instructing journalism at the University of Kansas.
Before joining the William Allen White School of Journalism, Thomas advised online, newspaper and yearbook media at St. Teresa’s Academy in Kansas City, Missouri. He has taught at many journalism workshops in the Midwest including workshops on newspaper page design, online journalism, photography, theme development and editorial leadership. St. Teresa’s Academy publications were frequent finalists and winners for NSPA’s Pacemaker award for print newspaper, yearbook and online journalism. The newspaper, yearbook and online news site also won top honors from national, regional and state organizations.
At the University of Kansas, Thomas teaches visual journalism and media writing in the journalism school. He also works as the executive director of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association, a group of more than 100 media advisers who gather for education, contests and conventions.
Before becoming a teacher, Thomas worked as a newspaper photographer in Indiana. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from University of Missouri and a master’s degree in journalism education from the University of Missouri as well.
