1-1:45: 6/22 “Level Up: Introducing the Benefits of Gaming into Your Journalism” with Genelle Belmas
Class Time:June 22 (Tu) 1-1:45
Ever been deeply into Minecraft or Call of Duty and then suddenly realized that you’ve been playing for hours beyond what you intended? Lost a round of Words with Friends and immediately challenged your opponent again? Why? Games tap into fundamental human needs like accomplishment, collection, and completion in ways that other activities don’t. Learn about gamification, see some great examples, and brainstorm ways of infusing the spirit of gaming into your journalism to increase audience engagement, it’s a win-win.
Genelle Belmas agrees with Jane McGonigal that “we are starving, and our games are feeding us.” She teaches and researches in the sexiest of all areas, gamification and media law, and she’s always in search of ways to combine the two. Her other research interests include student speech and press regulation and protections for online communication. She also loves cats, yarn, MMORPGs, office supplies, and strong coffee.

These sessions will present students with new ideas that they are unlikely to have encountered in the high school classroom. These are not software sessions. Instead, the sessions will present new ways of being a journalist or communicator in 2021 and provide lots of take-away examples that can motivate students when they return to school in the fall. Inspiration sessions last 45 minutes each via Zoom.
